혹시 세상에서 나만 외롭다고 생각이 드신다면 - 이소라의 노래들

오늘같이 맑고 좋은 날 이런 글을 써서 좀 죄송하다는 생각이 드네요. 그래도 외롭다고 느낄 분들도 있을지 모르고 노래들 자체가 여전히 좋아서 같이 하고 싶습니다.

저는 이소라의 album이 나올 때마다 무조건 삽니다. 여섯번째 album이였던 '눈썹달'도 기가 막혔고 가장 최근에 낸 7집도 추천합니다. 물론 이소라의 노래를 들을 때마다 힘이 빠지고 쳐져서 듣기 싫다는 분들도 알고 있습니다. 그런 분들은 다른 노래 들으시면 되죠, 뭐. 제 iPod는 음악이 random으로 나오게끔 해 놓는 경우가 많은데요. 이소라 노래 나올 때마다 정말 훌륭하다고 생각합니다. 노래 잘 하고 못 하고 이런 말을 하는 것과는 다르고요. 가사에서 멜로디에서 감정이 하나 하나 아주 잘 전해진다고 생각합니다.

'바람이 분다'라는 노래인데요. 들을 때마다 제가 CD를 사서 다른 것들과는 좀 다른 포장을 뜯고 처음으로 음악을 듣던 순간이 생각납니다. 지금이나 그 때나 제게는 감동적입니다.

Garage Band - If you could only see me by Tonic

이 사람들이 그런 과거를 가졌는지를 확인해 보지는 않았습니다. 미국 어디까지 가 봤느냐고 물어보는 광고도 있었는데 저도 나름대로 이리저리 돌아다녀 봤습니다만 몇 군데 빼놓고는 서로 상당히 비슷하다고 생각합니다. 어딜 가든 mall이라는 게 있고 거기 들어 와 있는 식당이나 점포들도 항상 일정하고요.

대도시에서 조금만 벗어나면 더욱 서로 비슷합니다. 미국사람들의 차고는 좀 크고 온갖 장비를 가지고 있는 경우가 많죠. 미국의 수 많은 band들은 그곳에서 출발하는 듯합니다. 처음에는 동네 친구들끼리 모여서 놀다가 프로를 시도하는 거겠죠. 아이들만 하는 건 아니더라고요. 주말마다 아저씨들이 취미로 모여서 노는 것도 많이 봤습니다.

우리 나라는 band 음악이 좀 덜 활성화되어 있다고 생각하는데요. 위와 같은 배경도 있지 않나 합니다. 악기를 연주할 공간이 없는 거죠. 이런 garage band 들은 결혼식 등에 동원되서 용돈도 좀 벌고 하던데요. 우리 나라의 경우는 음악이 혹시 필요하면 DJ를 부르겠죠.

철수 형님 방송에서 듣고 알게 되었는데요. 연주도 상쾌한 느낌이고 건전한 청년들이라는 생각이 듭니다. 밴드하는 사람이라기보다는 외모가 좀 직장인같이 보이기도 합니다.

블루스를 좋아 하지 않으시더라도 들어보셔야 할 - The Bluest Blues by Alvin Lee

guitar를 연주하려고 해 보셨다면 blues에 대해서 조금 아실 겁니다. 거의 모든 guitarist들이 blues를 연주하거나 blues에 바탕을 두고 연주를 하죠. 이 연주를 한 Alvin Lee는 'Ten Years After'라는 band를 이끌기도 했었는데요. 어렸을 때부터 천재guitarist로 유명했습니다.

블루스라고 하면 남녀가 가까이서 춤추는 것을 먼저 떠올리실지도 모르겠습니다. 아주 틀린 말은 아니라고 봅니다. 보통 blues라고 하는 음악들이 그런 식으로 slow dance를 할 수 있는 음악이라고 생각합니다.

전에 이런 류의 음악을 듣지 않으셨는데 한 번 듣고 딱 맘에 든다하는 경우는 좀 드물 듯 하고요. 한 두 번 듣고 날씨 우중충한 날 한 번 다시 들어 보세요.

수퍼맨이 필요해요 - Superman (It's not easy) by Five for Fighting

종종 본인이 superman이나 superwoman이기를 바라는 때가 있죠. 자기 자신이 그렇게 몰아가는 적도 있고 주변에 있는 사람들이 그렇게 하는 적도 있을 겁니다. 아마 가끔씩은 그렇게 될 수 있을 겁니다. 맨날 그러기를 바라면 원하지 않는 시간에 원하지 않는 장소에서 고장이 날거에요. 너무 상식적인 이야기죠?

저도 처음에는 band인 줄 알았는데, 혼자서 하는 사람이더라고요. member가 다섯 명이 아닌가 했었습니다. 피아노도 노래도 '죽이게'까지는 몰라도 멋있습니다. 이제는 시간이 많이 흘렀지만 9/11을 기억하는 concert에서 부르는 모습이네요.

이 artist의 다른 노래인데요. 가사가 특히 아름답다고 생각합니다. 'One hundred years'라는 노래입니다. 몇 년 전부터 Website에서 모금을 해서 여러 자선단체를 돕고 있더군요. 이런 질문을 하고 있습니다. "What kind of world do you want?" 만약 제게 묻는다면, 당연히 평화롭고 자유로운 세상을 원합니다. 특히, 공포로부터 자유로운 세상을 보고 싶습니다.

쪼인따라는 말은 어디서 어떻게 온 건 가요? - 'Wincing the night away' by The Shins

포수들이 쓰는 shin guard 라는 게 있죠?

Leon에서 꼬마 아가씨로 나와 유명해 진 Natalie Portman 이 나왔던 'Garden State'라는 영화가 있었습니다. 영화는 그렇게 크게 추천할 만하다고 기억하지 않지만 음악은 좋았습니다. 그 영화에서 여자 주인공이 좋아하는 음악을 얘기하는데 이 band를 얘기하더군요. 영화 분위기상 아주 멋있는 사람들일 거라고 생각이 들더군요. 그러고 나서는 평소 하는대로 열심히 찾아내서 잘 듣고 있습니다.

video를 보면 좀 복고적으로 나가는 청년들인가 봅니다. 아, 제가 위에 말한 영화의 soundtrack 추천합니다. 저는 영화음악 아주 좋아합니다. 많은 영화들이 좋은 음악을 모여서 골고루 들려주는 적이 많아서요. 어렸을 때 아주 좋아하던 과자 종합 셋트 같다는 생각을 합니다.

Electronica의 원조 - Zoolook by Jean Michelle Jarre

제가 지금 올바른 말을 하고 있는지 모르겠습니다. 지금 club 등에 가서 즐기고 하시는 분들이 좋아하는 장르의 음악을 electronica라고 표현하던데요. 저는 개인적으로 열심히 듣는 편은 아닙니다. 손악기를 선호하는 경향이 강해서요. 하지만 이 양반 album은 여러 개 갖고 있고 많이 들었습니다. 예전에는 방송 배경 음악으로 많이 쓰이고, 아마 어떤 뉴스 시작할 때도 나오고 하지 않았나 합니다. 아버지가 아주 유명한 영화 음악 작곡가였다고 기억하고 있습니다.

뭔가에 중독되어 있다고 생각이 들 때 - Savannah Woman by Tommy Bolin

아주 어렸을 때 부터 외국 음악을 열심히 듣고 잡지 보고 했었습니다. 솔직히 외국어도 많은 부분 그 채널을 통해서 배웠습니다. 가끔씩 아주 슬퍼하곤 했는데요. 제가 좋아하던 artist가 갑자기 죽는거죠. 종종 있는 일이였습니다. '약물중독'이라고 짧게 나오는 적이 제일 많았지 않나 합니다. 그 때는 어려서 이해 못 했죠. 사람들이 왜 그런 증상에 빠지고 죽기까지 하는지.

한국에서 가장 흔한 것이 알콜중독과 일중독 아닌가 합니다. 주변에서 아주 흔하게 볼 수 있죠. 정신과 질환이 있다고 주변에 알리는 것은 소위 social suicide로 간주되는 사회여서 얘기하기도 어렵고, 큰 맘 먹고 병원에 가도 의료보험 적용도 잘 안 되고 치료도 잘 안 되는 기가 막힌 경우를 쉽게 맞게 됩니다. 우리 나라에는 정신과가 좀더 많고 쉽게 갈 수 있게 해도 된다고 생각합니다.

미래가 유망한 기타리스트였고, 'Come Taste the Band'라는 명반을 내던 시절의 Deep Purple과 함께 했었죠. 제가 소개하는 이 노래야 그저 이 사람의 실력을 showcase로 보여주는 정도라고 생각합니다.

중독은 흔한 증상이고 있을 수 있는 일이라고 생각합니다. 본인과 주변에 있는 사람들이 인정하고, 도움을 청할 때 도와줘야 한다고 생각합니다. 누가 도와달라고 외칠 때는 도와줘야죠.

이리저리 돌아다니다 사랑에 빠지고 - Fooled around and fell in love by Elvin Bishop

미국이 참 풍족하던 시절에 나온 노래로 기억하고 있습니다. 어려서 영어 배운다는 핑계로 AFKN이라는 한국에 있는 미군들을 위해 방송하는 라디오를 열심히 들었는데요. FM도 아니고 AM이였던 것으로 생각합니다. Wolfman Jack이라든가 Casey Kasem 같은 전설적이 DJ들의 방송을 들으며 나름대로 일탈의 길을 걷고 있었습니다. 큰 죄를 저지르거나 한 건 아니고 나중에 musician이 되어야지 하고 상상하는 거였죠.

아, 제가 이 노래 아직도 기억하는 이유를 적어야겠네요. 고등학교 때 영어 과외를 했었는데요. 여학생들이 가끔씩 있다는 것이 제가 다니는 유일한 이유였음이 거의 분명합니다. 갈 때마다 단어와 숙어 시험을 봤는데, fool around 가 숙어로 나왔었습니다. 지금도 있는지 모르겠지만 종합영어라는 교재였습니다. 그거 지으신 분 나중에 collector가 되셨나 봅니다. 국립박물관에 가니까 코너가 있던데요.

video는 전혀 맘에 들지 않지만 음질이 개중에 나은 편이여서 알려드립니다. 고릴라와 노래가 무슨 관계인지는 전혀 모르겠지만 비디오를 그렇게 꾸몄네요.

58년 개띠의 믿기 어려운 변신 - Voila by Belinda Carlisle

예전에 'The Go-Go's'라는 여자들만 있는 band가 있었습니다. 거기서 노래하는 사람이 Belinda였는데요, 뒤의 이름이 spelling도 어렵고 그래서인지 짧게 불렀었죠. 누군가가 제게 선물로 준 CD가 있었는데 며칠 전까지 저는 그저 프랑스 여자 가수가 부른 노래인줄로만 알았습니다. 어느 날 갑자기 호기심이 발동해서 찾아보니 그 언니가 그 언니더군요. 한참 전에 프랑스로 건너 가서 살고 있는 모양입니다.

예전에는 가볍고 밝고 건전한 노래만 했었는데요. 그 음반 하나 내고 더 활동을 할지는 모르겠지만 들을만 하다고 생각합니다.

'Avec le temps', 'With the time'으로 번역하면 되나요? 수 많은 사람들이 불렀었죠.

Voila 라는 말은 프랑스 사람들이 가장 많이 쓰는 말 중의 하나일 겁니다. 저도 한 때 프랑스 회사에서 일하면서 재미로 말도 좀 배워보려고 했었는데요. 다른 사람들의 주의를 끌려고 할 때 쓰는 말이 아닌가 합니다. 영어로는 'Look!' 이 정도 될까요.

58년 개띠가 왜 그리 익숙한지는 저도 확실히 모르겠습니다. 어렸을 때는 나이를 올려 말하고 싶은 건지 나이를 불려서 얘기할 때는 띠도 알아야 되서 그러지 않았을까 정도입니다, 저로서는.

폼생폼사의 왕, David Coverdale - Here I go again by Whitesnake

순전히 주관적인 기준입니다. 저는 David Coverdale의 박력 있는 목소리와 소위 오바하는 액션을 좋아합니다. 테니스 라켓 등을 가지고 guitarist 흉내 내시던 분들이 배경 음악으로 많이 사용한 노래 아닐까 합니다. video를 보시면 아시겠지만 Whitesnake의 member들이 모두 폼생폼사하는 사람들 아닌가 합니다. 이 노래에 대해서 추억을 가지고 있는 사람들이 많나 보네요. video 아래 댓글들로 붙어 있는 글들을 보니까 웃음이 나오네요.

Rod 형님이 평생 결혼을 몇 번 했는지는 잘 모르겠지만 사귄 금발 여인들만 해도 열 명은 넘지 않을까 합니다. 가족 관계 등이 몹시 복잡할 듯도 하지만 적어도 보기에는 행복해 보입니다. 저의 괜한 잘못된 생각인지도 모르죠. 사랑 때문에 괴롭다하는 노래는 부른 적이 없는 듯 싶어요. 뭔지는 몰라도, 그것에 대해 얘기하고 싶지 않다는 노래는 부른 기억이 있지만요. 바람둥이로 보이지만 나이에도 불구하고 항상 귀여워 보이네요, 적어도 제게는요.

Rock 명반 #7 - Pink Floyd에 비견되는 " A Farewell to Kings" by Rush

남자끼리의 우정을 앞에 내세운 "I love you, man" 이라는 영화에서 band 중의 band라고 칭송을 받았던 Rush에 대한 얘기입니다. 물론, 영화 자체가 재미 있었습니다. 친구에 대한 필요를 별로 못 느끼고 여자만 쫓아다니던 한 남자가 남자들 사이의 우정을 알게된다는 그런 내용이였던 것으로 기억합니다. 주인공 친구로 나오는 사람은 어딘가에서 많이 봤다 했더니 TV의 어떤 sit-com에 고정으로 나오던 사람이더군요. 제게는 그 사람보다는 꼬마 의학박사 Doogie 역할을 했던 사람이 항상 먼저 보였습니다. 제게는 너무 웃겼던 comedy영화, "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" 에도 제 정신 아닌 사람으로 나왔었죠, 두기 했던 사람이요. 완전 갈팡질팡으로 훌륭한 album 소개를 망치기 전에 본론으로 돌아오겠습니다.

저는 그렇게 크게 동의하지 않습니다만 Rush를 Pink Floyd에 비교하는 분들이 많더군요. Vocalist이자 bassist인 Geddy Lee를 Roger Waters에, guitarist인 Alex Lifeson을 David 형님에게 말입니다. 본인들은 별로 좋아하지 않을 듯 합니다. 개성 만점인 사람들인데 말이죠. Rush의 여러 album을 가지고 있는데 서로 상당히 다르게 들립니다. 초기에는 상당히 heavy-metal 쪽이 아니였나 합니다. 어쨌든 저는 제가 지금 말씀 드리는 album을 보물처럼 아끼고 있습니다. 갑자기 제 vynil disk 가져 간 사람 찾아내서 때려주고 싶네요. 정말 돈 아껴서 어렵게 산 거였는데 누군가 빌려 가서 소식이 없습니다. CD는 가지고 있지만 album 앞의 그림을 너무 좋아했는데 어디 박혀 있을까요? 가져간 사람이 즐기기라도 하기를 바랍니다.

이 당시 Rush의 가사는 '반지의 제왕' 계열이라고나 할까요. fantasy 소설을 읽는 기분입니다. 당시 공부하기 싫어하던 제게 안식처를 제공해 주었었습니다.

album title과 같은 A farewell to Kings입니다. Geddy Lee의 목소리는 모사 불가능일 거라고 생각합니다. 크게 유명하지 않아서 사람들이 안 따라해서 다행이기도 하고요.

좀 걱정되지만 그래도 - Without your love by Roger Daltrey

철수 형님은 책에서 3대 기타리스트, 보컬리스트 이런 거 아주 싫어한다고 쓰셨던데 저는 그런 거 재밌어 합니다. 아마도 주로 일본 잡지들이 주도했던 거 아닌가 합니다. 요즘 자주 나오는 얘기는 아닙니다만 Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page 이 세 사람을 3대 기타리스트라고 했었던 듯 합니다. 어떻게 부르든 엄청난 guitar player들이였음은 이론의 여지가 별로 없지 않나 합니다.

3대 Rock 보컬리스트에 대해서는 기억이 가물가물 합니다. Led Zeppelin의 Robert Plant가 항상 들어갔던 것은 기억이 나는데요. Bad Company의 Paul Rogers를 얘기했던 적도 많았던 듯하고요. Rod Stewart도 혹시 들어갔나요? 죄송합니다, 모르겠습니다.

Who라는 group의 lead vocalist인 Roger Daltrey는 힘도 있고 개성이 있는 목소리를 가지고 있다고 생각합니다. 3대든 10대에 들어가든 아니든 제 생각이 별로 달라지는 것은 없습니다. 걱정이 된다고 하는 것은 제가 이렇게 발라드 풍의 노래를 알려드리면 이 양반 노래가 다 혹시 이런 풍일 거라고 생각하실까봐 하는 거고요. Who도 비슷한 분위기가 아니였을까 하실까봐 그렇습니다. Who에는 기타칠 때 손을 풍차처럼 돌리는 걸로 유명했던 Pete Townshend도 있고 개성 강한 네 명이 있던 group이죠. 네, 악기 때려 부시는 것도 있었습니다. 명품들을 그렇게...열심히 활동하던 때에 drummer가 세상을 떠나면서 그 이후로는 주춤했던 듯합니다. Led Zeppelin에게도 같은 일이 일어났었죠.

Roger Daltrey가 solo로 발표했던 아름다운 노래입니다. 제 귀로 듣기에는 처음에 통이 좀 큰 acoustic guitar로 시작하고, 만돌린이나 벤조도 연주되네요.

She is back - Soldier of Love by Sade

핸드폰으로 전화도 하고 문자도 주고 받고 사진도 가끔은 찍지만 저는 메모할 때 많이 씁니다. 몇 달 전부터 Sade가 새로운 album을 낸다는 것을 알고 나오면 바로 사야지 하고 써놓고 다니고 있었습니다. musician으로 나온 지 오래된 것은 알고 있었지만 25년이나 되었는지는 몰랐습니다. album은 이번이 여섯번째라고 하네요. 가장 마지막에 나온 것은 2000년이였다니 팬들을 좀 지나치게 기다리게 하는 가수이고 band입니다. Sade는 lead singer의 이름이기도 하고 band 이름이기도 하죠. Sade가 이번에 아래와 같이 얘기했다고 합니다.

“I only make records when I feel I have something to say. I'm not interested in releasing music just for the sake of selling something. Sade is not a brand.”

현재까지는 제일 제 귀에 맴도는 곡인 "Babyfather"라는 곡입니다. drum machine 소리인 듯 하네요, 처음부터 깔리는 소리는요.

아래 곡도 좀 세월이 흐르긴 했지만 아주 아름다운 노래라고 생각합니다. 저도 music video는 처음 봤는데 Sade의 매력을 잘 보여주네요, "By your side" 라는 노래입니다. 환상적인 화면을 보니 Peter Jackson 감독이 생각납니다. 최근에 "Lovely Bones"라는 영화에서 천국이 어떻게 생겼는지 보여줬거든요. 수년 전에 아주 재밌게 읽은 소설인데 제가 상상했던 것보다 천국이 훨씬 더 colorful 했습니다.
