Rock 명반 #7 - Pink Floyd에 비견되는 " A Farewell to Kings" by Rush

남자끼리의 우정을 앞에 내세운 "I love you, man" 이라는 영화에서 band 중의 band라고 칭송을 받았던 Rush에 대한 얘기입니다. 물론, 영화 자체가 재미 있었습니다. 친구에 대한 필요를 별로 못 느끼고 여자만 쫓아다니던 한 남자가 남자들 사이의 우정을 알게된다는 그런 내용이였던 것으로 기억합니다. 주인공 친구로 나오는 사람은 어딘가에서 많이 봤다 했더니 TV의 어떤 sit-com에 고정으로 나오던 사람이더군요. 제게는 그 사람보다는 꼬마 의학박사 Doogie 역할을 했던 사람이 항상 먼저 보였습니다. 제게는 너무 웃겼던 comedy영화, "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" 에도 제 정신 아닌 사람으로 나왔었죠, 두기 했던 사람이요. 완전 갈팡질팡으로 훌륭한 album 소개를 망치기 전에 본론으로 돌아오겠습니다.

저는 그렇게 크게 동의하지 않습니다만 Rush를 Pink Floyd에 비교하는 분들이 많더군요. Vocalist이자 bassist인 Geddy Lee를 Roger Waters에, guitarist인 Alex Lifeson을 David 형님에게 말입니다. 본인들은 별로 좋아하지 않을 듯 합니다. 개성 만점인 사람들인데 말이죠. Rush의 여러 album을 가지고 있는데 서로 상당히 다르게 들립니다. 초기에는 상당히 heavy-metal 쪽이 아니였나 합니다. 어쨌든 저는 제가 지금 말씀 드리는 album을 보물처럼 아끼고 있습니다. 갑자기 제 vynil disk 가져 간 사람 찾아내서 때려주고 싶네요. 정말 돈 아껴서 어렵게 산 거였는데 누군가 빌려 가서 소식이 없습니다. CD는 가지고 있지만 album 앞의 그림을 너무 좋아했는데 어디 박혀 있을까요? 가져간 사람이 즐기기라도 하기를 바랍니다.

이 당시 Rush의 가사는 '반지의 제왕' 계열이라고나 할까요. fantasy 소설을 읽는 기분입니다. 당시 공부하기 싫어하던 제게 안식처를 제공해 주었었습니다.

album title과 같은 A farewell to Kings입니다. Geddy Lee의 목소리는 모사 불가능일 거라고 생각합니다. 크게 유명하지 않아서 사람들이 안 따라해서 다행이기도 하고요.

Closer to the Heart 입니다. 비교적 최근의 Rush를 볼 수 있죠. 어떻게 보면 Geddy Lee가 Sean Penn이랑 약간 닮은 듯도 하네요.
