미국에서든 어디에서든 그렇게 히트한 영화는 아닐 거라고 생각합니다. 주제나 분위기나 뭘로 봐도 힛트할 만한 요소들을 가지고 있는 영화라고 생각하지 않았습니다. 다만 여자 주인공이 좀 특이하게 보였고 이 노래를 부른 아저씨는 더욱 그랬죠. 껄렁한 모습으로 많이 나왔었는데 별로 눈에 뜨이지 않다가 요즘은 많은 감독들이 이 배우를 부른다고 하네요.

제가 위게 보여주고 있는 것은 영화에서 배우가 부른 것인데요. 원래 가수가 부른 것을 음악이든 비디오이든 어디서도 찾지 못 했습니다. 이 노래 말고도 완전히 다른, 달콤하고 부드러운 노래도 많이 했었던 모양인데 살아 있던 동안에는 거의 주목을 받지 못 했다는 것을 읽고 안타깝게 생각했습니다. 요즘 세상과는 대중과의 전달 매체 등에서 많이 다른 세상이였죠.

제가 개인적으로 많은 영향을 받았고 아주 재밌게 읽었던 단편소설로 '논쟁의 기술'이 있습니다. 그저 말싸움에서 이기는 방법에 대해서 배우고자 하는 마음도 적잖게 있었고, 그런 면에서 도움도 많이 받았습니다. 항상 말을 아끼고 다른 사람의 말에 반박하는 식으로 하는 것이 '이기는' 데에는 도움이 된다는 확인을 받은 바 있습니다.

오늘 제가 말싸움에서 이기는 것에 대해서 얘기하고자 하는 것은 아닙니다. 정확하게 혹은 사실에 가깝게 표현하는 것이 어렵고 지금 현재 서로간에 혹은 일방적으로 주장하고 있는 것이 얼마나 가까이 가고자 하는 것에서 먼 것인지, 그러한 사실에 대해 생각하는 시간을 가졌으면 해서요. 어떤 매체이든간에 단정적으로 이야기하고 있는 것에 사실에 가까운 것이 얼마나 많은지 잘 모르지만, 먼 것이 많다고 느끼고 있습니다. 확률 혹은 빈도로 얘기할 수는 없지만요.

비행기를 오래 타고 먼 동네에 가서 저희와는 생김새도 다르고 지금까지 살아 온 환경도 많이 다른 사람들과 얘기할 기회가 있었습니다. 딱히 음악 얘기를 하지는 않았지만 생각은 많이 났죠. 저야 모든 것을 음악에다 적용하는 경향이 강하니까요.

다른 사람들이 얘기하는 것을 듣고 소위 말꼬리만 붙잡거나 명백히 실수한 것에 대해서만 주목하는 것을 제 자신도 종종 하는 편입니다. 오늘 밤에는 그런 자신에 대해 반성을 하고 있습니다. 그런 것보다는 먼저 나서서 진실 또는 사실에 접근하려고 말을 하든지, 노래를 하든지, 연주를 하고 하는 것이 더 이상적인 것이 아닌가 오늘 밤 생각하고 있습니다. 제 이런 생각에 가까운 노래를 아래 적고 있습니다.
