할머니의 따뜻한 모습이 기억나시나요? - Mary by Patty Griffin

요즘은 자식도 잘 낳지 않고 하니 할머니 할아버지를 만나거나 볼 기회는 더욱 적겠죠. 제 자신은 할머니라는 말을 들으면 항상 가슴이 따뜻해 짐을 느낍니다. 제 경우는 아주 직접 관련된 할머니는 안 계셨지만 할머니라고 부를 만한 분들이 주변에 계셔서 맛있는 반찬을 해주고 토닥거리고 해 줄 분을 가끔씩 볼 수 있었습니다. 다행이죠, 제가 그런 기억을 가지고 있다는 것이. 저도 그런 기억을 누군가에게 가능하면 여러 사람에게 주고 싶거든요.

Patty Griffin이 제 dream guitar 중의 하나인 Gibson acoustic을 들고 미국에서 구성지게 노래부르는데 있어서 둘째 가라면 서러워할 (제가 써 놓고도 한심하네요) Dixie Chicks의 Natalie Maines하고 함께 불렀습니다. 언젠가 들었는데 본인의 할머니에 대한 기억으로 만든 노래라고 말하는 것을 들었었습니다.

지금 제가 가장 좋아하는 guitarist - Electric Gypsy by Andy Timmons

air guitar 라고 들어보셨나요? 아무 것도 들지 않던지 아니면 guitar 모양처럼 생긴 걸 들고 guitar치는 흉내를 말하는 것으로 알고 있습니다. 지금 제가 말하는 guitarist 뿐만 아니고 다른 수 많은 guitarist처럼 일 부분이라도 guitar를 연주할 수 있었으면 하고 가상으로 연주를 많이 하곤 했습니다.

이 guitarist를 보면 저 혼자 괜히 미국 남부의 분위기를 떠올리곤 합니다. 제 상상이 많이 더해졌지만 실제로 미국 남부 출신의 훌륭한 guitarist들이 많기도 합니다. 연주도 좋지만 너무 자유로와 보여서 더욱 좋습니다. 항상 청바지에 편하게 입고 다니면서 guitar만을 연주할 것으로 생각되는 그야 말로 electric gypsy는 본인을 얘기하는 게 아닌가 하고 생각합니다.

벌써 한 여름 느낌이네요 - July Morning by Uriah Heep

7월 되면 이 노래에 대해서 얘기해야지 하고 있었는데 서울 근방은 30도 가까이 가는 바람에 기다리지를 못 하겠네요. 저는 참 좋아했던 band인데 활동하던 때에도 그렇고 지금까지도 그리 훌륭한 band라고 칭찬받지는 않는 모양입니다. 이상하게 생각됩니다. 이 곡을 들으면 Deep Purple의 어떤 심각한 곡 못지 않다고 생각되고 다른 곡들도 연주나 vocal이나 전개 방식이 다 좋다고 생각하거든요. 아마도 Deep Purple의 아류라고 몰아갔던 게 아닌가 합니다. Aerosmith 가 처음 나올 때 Rolling Stones 의 아류로 간주했던 것하고 비슷한 거 아닐까요? 전 평론가도 아니고 음악 좋아하는 사람일 뿐이니까 별 관계는 없습니다만 그런 글들을 읽으면 좀 김샌다고나 할까요?
