혼자서 운전하고 가실 때 들으시면 제일 좋지 않을까 합니다. Why rock? 에 대한 첫번째 답은 될 것으로 생각합니다. 왜 혼자여야 되는지는, 일단 음악 volume에 대한 느낌이 사람마다 다르다고 생각해서 입니다. guitar의 어느 줄의 어디 쯤에서 연주되고 있는지를 머릿 속에 그리려고 하는 사람, bass가 그야 말로 physically 심금을 울려야 속이 시원한 사람, drum을 지금 내가 치고 있는 듯하게 느끼고 싶은 사람, 등등이 있거든요. 뭐, 항상 시끄럽게 듣지는 않습니다.

차 운전이 좀 위험할 수 있겠지만 멋진 차를 타고 음악을 쿵쾅거리고 듣는 건 누구나 한 번 쯤 하고 싶은 거 아닐까요? 어떤 음악인지는 다 자기 취향이고요, 당연히.

Rock 명반 #4-2 (It's a miracle by Roger Waters)

저 아래 제가 소개한 Pink Floyd의 epic 담당(순전히 제가 우기는 주장)인 Roger Waters의 'Amused to Death'에 실린 노래입니다. video를 보고 Roger의 음악이 참담한 현실을 보여주기 때문에 우울해진다는 comment가 있어서 조금 망설여지지만 제게는 ranking을 따질 수 없는 명반이기에 그래도 한 번 더 밀려고요.

guitar가 훌륭한 악기이고, 그 소리에 많이 감동 받고 하지만 여러 가수들의 목소리와 노래는 절대 그에 못지 않은 감동을 줍니다. 지금은 좀 주춤하고 있지만 초기에 좋은 노래를 많이 들려 주었던 band죠. 어디 가다가 신문에서 봤는데 이 band에서 목소리를 맡고 있는 친구가 상당 기간 아파서 쉬었던 모양입니다. 보시다시피 원래도 마르지는 않았지만 정신 계통의 질환을 앓으면서 몸무게 아주 많이 늘었었나 봐요. 지금은 어떤지 모르겠습니다. 이 노래 외에도 여러 노래들을 들을 수 있네요.

Guitar 이야기 #4 - Yamaha SG played by Masayoshi Takanaka

어렸을 때부터 지금까지 dream guitar 중의 하나인데요. 한 번 메어본 게 전부입니다. Les Paul도 무지 무겁지만 이건 더 무겁던데요. 소위 sustain이라고 길게 끌리는 소리가 나려면 기타 body가 이래야한다는 사실인지 편견인지 모를 생각을 갖고 있습니다.

제가 guitar를 배우기 시작할 때 영향을 아주 많이 준 일본의 guitarist, Masayoshi Takanaka입니다. 이 아저씨는 주로 이 model만 들고 나오는 걸로 알고 있습니다. Santana형님도 오랫 동안 비슷한 model로 연주했던 것으로 기억하고 있습니다. 지금은 주로 PRS라는 회사의 guitar를 쓰지만요. 두 사람 사이에는 비슷한 점이 꽤 있습니다. 아마도 Takanaka가 Santana와 비슷하게 가려고 한 거겠죠. 일본이라는 나라의 특기라고나 할까요. 외국것을 수입해서 자기류로 만드는 거죠. 제가 오늘 말씀드리는 guitar도 Gibson의 SG model을 보고 copy하는데서 시작하지 않았나 합니다.

저 아래 있는 Char라든가 Takanaka라든가 등을 친구 형님 통해 알게 되어서 오랫 동안 열심히 쫓았습니다. 좀 실망스러웠던 것은 제가 이렇게 일본 guitarist들을 좋아하니까 일본에서 음악 좋아하는 사람들은 당연히 이 사람들을 알겠지 해서 몇 번 물어 봤었는데요, 아무도 모를 뿐만 아니라 저를 이상한 사람으로 생각하는 눈빛으로 보더군요. 아, 한 사람 있었습니다. 그런 류의 음악을 듣고 싶으면 대학가의 CD shop으로 가보라고 얘기해 줘서 Waseda 대학에 갔었습니다. 지금도 그 분에게 감사해하고 있습니다. 제가 아주 아끼는 몇몇 음반들을 거기서 샀거든요.

지금도 그런 경향이 좀 있다고 보는데 일본에서는 CF에 신곡을 쓰면서 같이 띄우려고 하는 경우가 많았습니다. Takanaka의 여러 연주곡들이 광고 배경음악으로 쓰이기도 했죠. 제가 어떤 광고에 쓰인 음악이라고 하니까, 아 그렇구나 하는 일본사람들이 꽤 있었습니다.

제가 아주 좋아한 Takanaka의 album 중에서 일본의 도깨비들을 테마로 한 게 있었는데요. 연주도 좋았지만 CD에 있던 그림들이 생각납니다. 제가 위에 copy한 주소들이 둘 다 그 album에 있는 곡들을 live로 연주한 것을 찍은 거네요. 좀 오래 되어서 그런지 음질과 화질이 다 별로인게 좀 아쉽습니다.

제게 큰 영향을 준 제 친구 형님께 제 젊은 시절과 현재를 풍부하게 해 주셔서 감사드린다고 말씀 드리고 싶습니다. 덕분에 진짜 Les Paul도 만져 보고 좋은 일 많았습니다.

본인의 재능을 혹시 망칠까봐 걱정 되는 - Church Bells by Beyonce

지금은 웬지 모르게 제게는 뭔가 나사가 빠진 것처럼 보이는 Mariah Carey의 초기 album들을 들었을 때 정말 대단한 가수가 나왔구나 하고 생각했었습니다. 음역이 넓은 것은 대단한 일이지만 노래하는 것이 묘기 부리는 것하고는 좀 다른 건데 자꾸 그 쪽 얘기만 하는 것이 좀 불안하다고 생각했었죠.

아주 인기 있는 가수이고 실력도 대단하다고 생각합니다. 영화도 많이 나오는데요, 주인공을 꼭 하려고 한다고 보다는 본인이 잘 할 수 있는 역할을 맡는 현명함도 가지고 있는 듯하더군요.

비행기 안에서 처음 봤을 때 음악을 제대로 들을 수 있으면 참 좋았겠다 하고 생각한 영화였습니다. 'Cadillac Records'라는 영화였습니다. 실존 인물들이 많이 나오는데요. 제 친구가 여러 번 얘기해서 저도 알게 된 Muddy Waters라는 guitarist가 중심 인물입니다. 위의 video에서 담배 피고 있는 아저씨죠. Beyonce는 예전의 Etta James라는 가수 역할을 맡았습니다. 아래의 곡도 정말 구성지게 불렀죠. 물론 제가 조동사 예문으로 많이 썼습니다.

그래도 어디선가 노래를 들으실 수 있는 것들을 찾다가 보니까 그럴 수 없는 곡들이나 가수들에 대해서는 소개하기가 어렵네요. Natalie의 이 노래도 좋지만 이 외에도 좋은 노래들을 아주 많이 불렀습니다. 최근에도 아주 오랜만에 album을 냈네요. 예전에는 10,000 Maniacs라는 개성 강한 band에서 노래했었죠.

음질이 별로라 사실 별로 추천하고 싶지는 않습니다.

그러고 싶지는 않지만 좋아하는 음악등으로 사람에 대한 인상이 많이 좌우되는 편입니다. 예전에 어떤 여자분 집에 초대받았었는데요. 평소에 명품 쇼핑백 들고 다니는 걸 가끔씩 봐서 그냥 그런 분으로 생각했었습니다. 집에 초대받았을 때 아주 환상적인 음질의 훌륭한 음악들이 계속 나왔고 어디서 많이 들었는데 누군지 잘 모르겠더라고요. 그게 Natalie Merchant였습니다. 그 분에 대한 생각을 완전히 바꾸었죠. 자세히 말씀드리기는 그렇지만 아주 좋은 쪽으로 갔고 지금도 그렇게 생각하고 있습니다. 저같은 사람이 많지는 않겠지만 혹시 써먹을 수 있으실 지도 모릅니다. 제 말과 관계 없이 훌륭한 음악을 하는 artist입니다.

사랑은 도대체 어디에 있냐고요? - Where is the love by Black Eyed Peas

지난 일요일에 우연히 KBS에서 방송된 '울지마, 톤즈'라는 프로그램을 봤습니다. 처음부터 보지는 못 했지만 제가 지난 몇 년 동안 본 것 중에 가장 훌륭한 방송이라고 생각했습니다. Sudan의 Tonj에서 의사및 신부로 일하시다가 올해 초에 돌아가신 이태석 신부님과 그 지역 사람들에 대한 얘기를 보여주었는데요. 이 신부님은 정말 다방면에 천재인 천사라고 말씀드릴 수 밖에 없더군요. 찾아서 보실 수 있으시면 보세요. 절대 시간 낭비는 아닐겁니다.

봉사하는 분들에 대한 선입견이 제게도 강했다는 것을 느낄 수 있었습니다. 이 분은 다른 사람들이 아침부터 저녁까지 일하는 것처럼 새벽부터 밤 늦게까지 거기 있는 사람들에게 의사가 되고 음악선생님이 되고 신부가 되고 하는데 표정이나 행동에서 누가 누구에게 봉사한다는 생각은 전혀 들지 않더군요. 한국에도 계시고 했던 외국인 수사분이 너무 안타깝게 얘기했던 것이 기억이 납니다. 본인은 나이도 많고 그런데 본인을 데려가지 왜 젊고 이렇게 재능 많은 분을 데려가냐고 하시는데 정말 마음이 아프더군요.

방송 보고 나서 계속 생각나는 노래들이 있었는데 이 노래가 제일 가깝다고 생각했습니다.

번역을 하려면 할 수도 있겠지만 워낙 rhyme이 강한 가사여서 뜻을 강조하는 것은 좀 안 맞는다고 생각합니다. 그래도 몇 마디 달아보려고요.

'조제와 호랑이와 물고기'라는 제목이였습니다. 조제는 여주인공이 줏어 읽은 사강의 소설의 여주인공 이름이고요, 나머지 둘은 영화 보시면 알 수 있을 겁니다. 제목에 집착하실 필요는 없겠고요.

한국에서도 나름대로 힛트한 영화여서 긴 설명은 안 드려도 되지 않을까 합니다. 우리 나라에 이누도 잇신이란 감독을 널리 알린 영화라고 봅니다. '犬童 一心'이 감독의 이름인데요, 아주 재밌는 이름이라고 생각합니다. 성은 강아지라고 저는 해석하고 있고요, 뒷 부분은 문신 할 때 많이 쓰는 단어기도 하지만 작명하신 분이 '한 마음으로 한 가지만 한다'라는 생각이 있지 않았나 합니다.

이 감독의 영화는 거의 다 봤는데요 항상 좀 슬픈 구석이 있지만 유머러스한 것도 꼭 같이 나오는 것으로 기억합니다. 저는 한 번 좋아하면 좀 심하게 빠지는 편이라 소설도 보고, 사진집도, 영화도 사서 보고 했었습니다. 소설은 일본의 유명한 작가가 쓴 단편 소설이고 happy end인 것을 말씀 드리고 싶네요. 남자 주인공이 관객들 앞에 나와서 얘기할 때 영화 찍던 분위기가 다시 떠오른다고 계속 울던 모습이 기억 납니다. 영화에서 주인공들이 막 울고 했던 건 없었던 것으로 생각합니다. 보는 사람을 울게 해야겠죠.

많은 분들이 보셨을텐데 혹시 안 보신 분들에게는 꼭 보시라고 말씀 드리고 싶고, 전에 보신 분들도 새로운 사랑을 하고 계시거나 꿈꾸고 있거나 하신다면 한 번쯤 더 보셔도 된다고 하고 싶네요.

걸어 다니다 보니까 좀 덥게 느껴집니다. 지난 겨울이 너무 길고 추워서 개인적으로 아주 지겹다고 느꼈거든요. 봄이 없이 겨울과 여름만 있는 거 아닌가 하고 속으로 생각하기도 했었습니다. 눈을 'white devil'로 표현하는데 고개가 끄덕였던 것은 이번이 처음이 아닌가 합니다. 봄은 워낙 짧으니 시간 날 때 마다 많이 즐기시면 좋겠고요. 아래 노래는 2월인데도 봄처럼 느꼈다는 말도 나오는데요, 사실 이번 겨울만 빼놓고는 사람들이 겨울 내내 골프 치고 했던 생각이 납니다.

그나마 음질이 좀 나은 듯 한 걸로 골랐지만 만족스럽지는 않네요. 가사를 읽어보니 좀 종적인 배경이 있지 않나 하는 생각도 듭니다. 그냥 봄을 생각하시면서 가볍게 들으시면 되지 않을까요? 이 여자 가수가 불렀던 'Damn, I wish I was your lover'란 노래도 있습니다. 문법책에 나온 대로 조금 바꿔서 예문으로 많이 써먹었고요. 노래 안에서 damn을 너무 통쾌하게 외치지 않나 했었습니다.
