저는 운이 좋아서 대학생 시절에는 허구헌날 술 마시고 지내도 졸업도 잘 하고 취업도 잘 할 수 있었습니다. 요즘 대학생들이 어떤지는 신문 읽으면서 대강 알고 있고요. 그 날도 신촌에서 제가 잘 가는 빽판 가게 옆에서 생맥주 마시면서 제가 아는 음악 얘기로 목소리를 높이고 있었습니다. 옆자리에 계시던 저희보다는 형님들로 보이는 사회인분들 중의 한 분이 'band하면 Mountain 이지' 하고 저희 대화에 들어오시더군요. 제일 문제는 제가 그 band를 몰랐다는 거죠. 인터넷도 없던 시대라 찾아내는데 한참 걸렸습니다. Leslie West라고 하는 guitarist를 알아내는 것도 오래 걸렸고요. 지금 애써서 이 아저씨나 그 band를 찾으시려고 애쓰실 필요는 없을 듯 합니다. '궁상각치우'의 5음계를 쓰는 blues 와 rock이 합쳐서 어떤 음악을 만들 수 있구나 하는 정도로 그냥 들으셔도 좋지 않을까 하고요.
술 마시다가 보면 취해서 혹은 다른 여러 가지 이유로 취약해지죠. 제가 잊을 수 없는 하나의 장면은 술 깨어 보니 꽤 큰 방에서 혼자 누워있는 자신을 발견한 겁니다. 화들짝 놀래서 밖으로 나와서 택시를 타고 집에 가려고 하는데 저기 조금 먼 발치에서 어떤 사람이 몽둥이를 들고 제 쪽으로 달려 오는 겁니다. 소위 '퍽치기'라는 게 아니였나 하는 생각입니다. 손님이 이미 타고 있는 택시를 앞을 가로 막고 세워서 억지로 타고 도망 갔습니다. 술 마시고 취하는 거야 흔하게 있는 일이고, 같이 드시는 분이 사는 집 앞까지 데려다 주면 이상적일텐데요.
비교적 건강한 편이여서 아프다고 하면 술 많이 마셔서 아픈 일 밖에 없는데 그 동안 말도 안 되는 이유 만들어 내느라고 온갖 상상력을 동원했었습니다. 이미 돌아가신 분들 또 돌아가시게 해서 정말 죄송합니다. 정말 음악과는 관계도 없는 얘기를 오래도 주절댔군요.

직장 생활 초년병시절에 형님이라고 부르던 선배분이 있었습니다. 외모도 멋지고 목소리 행동 모두 멋있는 분이셨는데 방랑벽이라고 할지, 어느날 갑자기 회사도 안 나오고 집에서 가족들이 찾으러 오는, 특이한 분이였습니다. 그 분 아버님, 사모님이 상의하러 오셨던 것이 기억에 생생합니다. 저는 개인적으로 아주 좋아하던 분이였는데요, 정말 말수가 적은 분이였습니다. 제 일의 특성상 밤 늦게까지 일하다가 들어가는 적이 자주 있었는데요. 어느날 밤에 함께 차를 타고 가다가 형님에게 왜 그리 말씀을 안 하시냐고 진지하게 물었었습니다. 그 양반 말씀이 말을 안 하면 안 할 수록 손해를 안 본다고 저를 쳐다보며 말씀하셨는데 사회 초년병에게는 나름대로 충격적인 말이였습니다. 할 말이 있지만 하지 않는 게 나을 듯해서 안한다는 것이, 'bite my tongue'이라고 알고 있고요 아주 유용한 표현입니다.

사랑에 빠지면 항상 모자라다는 생각이 드나봐요 - Just can't get enough by Nouvelle Vague
아마도 이런 기사였던 것으로 기억합니다. 추석 연휴를 앞두고 있었던 때였던 것으로 생각하는데요. 언제나처럼 차가 많이 막힐 것으로 생각하니까 떠나기 전에 음악을 준비해 놓으면 좋지 않을까해서 몇몇 musician들에게 기자가 음악을 추천해 달라고 했습니다. 그 기사를 통해서 알게된 것이 Jason Mraz와 이 Nouvelle Vague입니다. 둘다 좋아하는데요, 앞의 가수는 한국에서 상당한 인기를 가지고 있는 것으로 알고 있습니다. 제가 오늘 소개하는 team도 재밌고 귀여운 노래들을 가볍게 들려줍니다. 차가 막혀 있을 때 어느 정도 위안이 되는지는 모르겠습니다. 제 경우에는 체증 중에는 음악도 별로 위안이 안 되더라고요.

음악을 듣는 방식과 환경은 다 다를 것이라고 생각합니다. 저도 마루에 speaker도 비교적 큰 거로 가지고 있고 하지만 현재는 거기 앉아서 듣는 거보다는 훨씬 더 작은 장치를 통해서 듣는 시간을 많이 가지고 있습니다.

Bose 스피커를 가지고 있었는데요. 항상 나중에 돈 벌면 저거 사야지 했었는데 아직까지도 한 번도 못 샀습니다. 샀더라도 집에서 제대로 틀지 못 했겠지 하는 생각은 하고 있지만요.

음악을 만들고 감상하는 새로운 방법 - Apologize by Timbaland featuring One Republic
제가 말씀 드리는 것이 제게는 새롭지만 절대적으로 새롭다고 얘기할 수는 없다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 이 노래는 한참 전에 라디오에서 듣고 참 듣기 좋다는 생각을 했었는데 오늘 소개하고 있네요. 많은 분들이 이미 아시고 좋아하고 할 것으로 생각합니다.
한 동안 제게 음악을 알려주고 하는 사람이 없어서 정체되고 있었는데 어제 몇 시간에 걸쳐서 차를 타고 움직이면서 여러 가지의 음악을 듣고 배우고 했습니다. 저도 한참 전에 춤추러 가고 했습니다만 그곳에 음악을 들으러 간다거나 유명한 DJ들의 공연을 보러 가고 하지는 않았는데요. 요즘은 그런 모양입니다. 제 자신에게 아주 쏙쏙 들어오거나 하지는 않았지만 그 종류의 음악을 몇 시간 듣고 교육도 좀 받고 했습니다. 지구 상에 새로운 것이 없다는 말도 있지만 이것저것 듣다 보니 다 어디에선가로부터 조금씩 발전시킨 것이 아닌가 하는 생각이 들었습니다.
악기 사용이 예전보다 많이 줄겠구나 하는 것이 저로서는 많이 아쉬운 점이지만 어떻게 보면 아주 편리하다고도 볼 수 있겠죠. 제가 오늘 소개하는 음악이 딱히 electronica라는 장르의 음악이라고 할 수는 없겠지만 그냥 끌어대고 있습니다. 제가 재밌게 생각한 것은 다른 노래들을 서로 엮어서 만들어 나가는 것이였는데요 예전에도 Beatles 힛트곡이라든가 classic 힛트곡들을 묶어서 만들어 놓은 것들도 있었죠.
좀더 어리고 젊은 분들과 음악 얘기하고 들어보고 하시라고 말씀 드리고 있습니다. 아주 재밌는 시간이 될 겁니다.

사과하기에 너무 늦는 경우는 개인적으로는 없다고 봅니다만.
한 동안 제게 음악을 알려주고 하는 사람이 없어서 정체되고 있었는데 어제 몇 시간에 걸쳐서 차를 타고 움직이면서 여러 가지의 음악을 듣고 배우고 했습니다. 저도 한참 전에 춤추러 가고 했습니다만 그곳에 음악을 들으러 간다거나 유명한 DJ들의 공연을 보러 가고 하지는 않았는데요. 요즘은 그런 모양입니다. 제 자신에게 아주 쏙쏙 들어오거나 하지는 않았지만 그 종류의 음악을 몇 시간 듣고 교육도 좀 받고 했습니다. 지구 상에 새로운 것이 없다는 말도 있지만 이것저것 듣다 보니 다 어디에선가로부터 조금씩 발전시킨 것이 아닌가 하는 생각이 들었습니다.
악기 사용이 예전보다 많이 줄겠구나 하는 것이 저로서는 많이 아쉬운 점이지만 어떻게 보면 아주 편리하다고도 볼 수 있겠죠. 제가 오늘 소개하는 음악이 딱히 electronica라는 장르의 음악이라고 할 수는 없겠지만 그냥 끌어대고 있습니다. 제가 재밌게 생각한 것은 다른 노래들을 서로 엮어서 만들어 나가는 것이였는데요 예전에도 Beatles 힛트곡이라든가 classic 힛트곡들을 묶어서 만들어 놓은 것들도 있었죠.
좀더 어리고 젊은 분들과 음악 얘기하고 들어보고 하시라고 말씀 드리고 있습니다. 아주 재밌는 시간이 될 겁니다.

정말로 비를 본 적이 있나요? - Have you ever seen the rain by CCR
이 형님들의 band 이름은 Creedence Clearwater Revival 인데요. 어떻게 이름을 지은 건지 저는 모릅니다. 오늘도 이리저리 왔다갔다 했는데요. 'Here comes the rain again'을 계속 부르다가 그치지를 않길래 이 노래도 좀 불렀습니다. 다른 건 몰라도 비가 죽죽 내리는 느낌은 잘 표현한 노래라고 생각합니다. 목소리가 참 개성 있습니다. 힘도 있고요.

Dio 형님이 세상을 떠났다고 들어서요 - Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath
좀 전에 철수 형님 방송을 듣다 보니 Ronnie James Dio가 세상을 떠났다는 얘기를 하시는 걸 듣고 여러 가지가 생각이 났습니다. 참 개성이 강한 singer였고 저를 비롯해서 노래하는 거나 motion을 따라하려고 하는 사람들이 많았죠. video에도 나오지만 검지와 새끼 손가락으로 하는 손짓을 Dio가 처음 시작했다는 얘기도 있네요. Ritchie Blackmore와 함께 Rainbow를 오래 하면서 좋은 곡을 많이 들려줬었습니다. 기사를 찾아 보니 Black Sabbath 얘기가 더 먼저 나오네요.

끝까지 한 번 가 보자는 거죠 - Take it to the limit by the Eagles
가끔씩 생각나는 노래입니다. Eagles 노래 가사를 읽어 보면 Hotel California 처럼 해석은 되지만 무슨 뜻으로 부른 건지는 잘 모르겠는 노래가 있습니다. 이 노래도 어떤 맥락에서 부른지는 모르지만 저 혼자 나름 대로 해석해서 이해하고 있습니다. 노래방에서도 가끔 부르고 싶은 생각이 있었지만 노래 부르다가 숨 넘어가겠더라고요. Eagles에서는 아마도 bass 연주하던 아저씨가 부른 듯 합니다. 그 아저씨는 노래 많이 안 불렀죠, 상대적으로. 그 정도는 잘 하는 거 아니였나 봅니다.

삶이 긴장의 연속이기는 하지만 사람이 받아들일 수 있는 한계가 사람마다 조금씩 다르지만 반드시 있다고 봅니다. 가끔씩 뻥 터뜨리고 좀 쉬고 해야 하지 않나 해요.
올 여름에 컴백 공연을 한다네요 - Emerson, Lake and Palmer, The Super Group
super group이라는 말을 가끔씩 듣습니다. 최근에는 Foo Fighters를 하고 있는 Nirvana 출신의 아저씨가 Led Zeppelin의 bassist였던 John Paul Jones와 'Them Crooked Vultures'라는 group으로 음반을 냈었고요. 이보다는 좀더 super group이라고 할 수 있는 'Chickenfoot'이라는 band가 있죠. solo guitarist로 유명한 Joe Satriani 와 'Van Halen'하고도 있었던 Sammy Hagar가 다른 유명한 두 아저씨와 함께 작업을 했죠. 이름들 쓰기가 귀찮아서가 아니고 뒤의 음반은 그런 대로 들을 만 했는데 앞의 건 별 감흥을 못 느껴서 제가 자세히 말씀 드리면 안 좋다는 말만 늘어 놓지 않을까 해서요.
Emerson, Lake and Palmer가 진정한 super group 이였다고 생각합니다. 각각의 사람들이 아주 훌륭한 musician이고 더 중요한 것은 셋이 뭉쳐서 개성 있고 깊은 음악을 만들어 냈었다고 느꼈습니다. 요즘은 잘 안 나오지만 pro golfer로 이름이 좀 있었던 Ian Woosnam과 약간 비슷한 Greg Lake 가 전면에 많이 나왔죠. 보름달 얼굴이라는 말이 딱 맞는 사람인데요 노래나 연주는 항상 최고였다고 기억하고 있습니다. super group이라는 말이 암시하듯 각자 자기 개성을 너무 살리려고 하다 보니 좀 덜 섞인 salad 같다는 느낌을 주는 곡들도 꽤 있었지만 항상 앞서 나가려고 하던 음악가들이였습니다. 전성기 때 연주회는 항상 굉장히 많은 사람들을 모았던 것으로 기억하고 있습니다.
몇 곡을 찾아 봤는데 다 그냥 음질이 별로라서 제목들만 말씀 드리려고요. 가장 대중적으로 힛트했던 곡들인데요, 그저 대중적이고만 한 곡들은 아닙니다. 꼭 들어볼 만한 곡들입니다.

노래들이 모두 중세 시대의 소매가 넓은 옷을 입고 나와서 부르면 어울릴 듯하다고 생각하는데 저 혼자의 생각인지도 모릅니다. album jacket도 항상 특이한 그림을 많이 썼었는데요 세번째 노래가 들어간 album에는 Giger라는 괴물 그림 많이 그리는 아저씨가 작업을 했었죠. Album 제목도 'Brain Salad Surgery' 였으니까요. 여러 가지로 연출을 많이 하던 아저씨들인 것만은 분명한 듯 하네요.
이 아저씨들이 올해 7월에 영국에서 한 번 같이 공연한다고 하고 있습니다. 아, 가장 유명한 곡은 'C'est la vie'라는 곡이네요.

노래들이 모두 중세 시대의 소매가 넓은 옷을 입고 나와서 부르면 어울릴 듯하다고 생각하는데 저 혼자의 생각인지도 모릅니다. album jacket도 항상 특이한 그림을 많이 썼었는데요 세번째 노래가 들어간 album에는 Giger라는 괴물 그림 많이 그리는 아저씨가 작업을 했었죠. Album 제목도 'Brain Salad Surgery' 였으니까요. 여러 가지로 연출을 많이 하던 아저씨들인 것만은 분명한 듯 하네요.
이 아저씨들이 올해 7월에 영국에서 한 번 같이 공연한다고 하고 있습니다. 아, 가장 유명한 곡은 'C'est la vie'라는 곡이네요.
