Guitar 이야기 # 5- Telecaster (The Messiah will come again by Roy Buchanan)

좀 찔립니다. 이 기타 만져본 적도 없을 뿐만 아니라 가까이서 본 적도 없어서요. 게다가 앞으로도 이 기타를 가질 계획은 없습니다. 제게는 너무 어렵게 느껴져서요. 많은 사람들이 쓰지는 않는 것으로 알고 있습니다. 그 사람들은 다 특이한 소리를 들려주더군요. Roy Buchanan이라는 전설에 가까운 guitarist가 연주와 낭독(?)을 한 아래 곡을 들어 보시면 저와 같은 생각에서 조금 벗어나시지 않을까 합니다. 전설에 가까운 기타를 제가 좀 깎아 내리고 있지 않나 해서 좀 더 찔립니다.

점점 더 추억 덩어리가 되어 가고 있어요 - Englishman in New York by Sting

이 노래를 처음 듣던 압구정동의 카페가 생각납니다. 윤인가 준인가 그랬는데 나름 대로 franchise였지 않나 지금은 생각합니다. 방배동에도 있고 다른 데에도 있고 했던 기억이 있어서요. 한 친구가 신청하면서 알려준 곡인데 참 세련되고 멋진 노래라고 생각했습니다.

눈사람 만드는 이미지입니다. 세월이 흐르면서 하나 둘의 추억이 점점 쌓이고 뭉치는 느낌이 가끔 들고 있습니다. 추억덩어리라는 말도 말 잘하기로 유명한 친구의 말에서 인용하고 있네요.

조금 더 생각해보면 옛날 것이라고 무조건 좋은 것은 아니라는 생각이 듭니다. 고전 카메라면서 예쁘고 해도 지금도 좋은 사진을 만들 수 있어야 여전히 사랑 받는 거 아닌가 합니다. 노래도 그 때도 좋고 지금도 좋아야 클래식이라고 할 수 있지 않을까요?

열심히 들여다 보니 가사도 참 좋네요. 신사의 나라인 영국을 제가 잘 알지는 못하지만 신사 또는 기사가 된다는 것은 이상적이라는 것을 가사에서도 알 수 있다고 봅니다. 저도 어렸을 때부터 신사가 되야 된다고 들었는데 제 경우는 약간 일본적인 모델이였음을 크고 나서 알게 되었습니다.

잘 먹고 잘 살기 쉽지 않아요 - Somewhere over the rainbow

보통 서로 싸우다 헤어질 때 잘 먹고 잘 살으라고 하죠. 저는 예전부터 이 말이 저주에 가깝다고 생각하고는 있었습니다. 제가 꼭 보고 싶었는데 상영관을 찾기 어려워서 못 본 영화가 있었습니다. '오이시맨'이라는 건데요. 아주 재미 있을 거라고는 생각지 않지만 '이케와키 치즈루'라는 일본 여자 배우가 나오는 거라 관심 있게 찾고 있었습니다. 조제와 호랑이라는 영화에서 처음 보고는 대단한 연기력을 가진 배우라고 생각하고, 그 뒤로는 열심히 쫓아 보고 있습니다. 나왔던 드라마나 영화가 제게는 실망을 주는 적이 없었습니다.

이 영화에는 이민기라는 배우도 나오죠. 다른 사람과는 완전히 다른 분위기가 있다고 생각합니다. 어쨌든 '오이시맨' 보는데 처음에 제가 제목으로 쓴 대사가 나오고 저는 이 노래가 생각나더군요. 무슨 의식의 흐름인지는 모르겠습니다만. 수 많은 가수들이 불렀지만 아래 비디오는 배경 화면이 참 맘에 들더군요.

수 많은 가수들이 노래하고 Jeff Beck 등이 연주로도 들려주었었죠. 제가 좋아하는 version은 아래 Jewel이라는 가수가 노래한 겁니다. 무지개를 꿈꾸고 가까이 가려고 하고 하는 것, 어려서 교과서에도 읽었던 기억이 어렴풋이 있습니다.

호주 musician 하면 누가 생각나시나요? 저는 Olivia Newton-John 언니가 제일 먼저 떠오르고요, 그 다음에는 아주 특이한 목소리와 외모의 vocalist가 전면에 있던 'Men at work'도 생각이 나고 물론 반바지 guitarist가 있던 ACDC도 떠오릅니다.

이 band도 다양한 음악을 들려 주었죠. Michael Hutchence라고 아주 잘 생긴 vocalist가 살아 생전에 아주 인기가 많았고요 젊은 나이에 갑자기 약물 중독으로 세상을 떠났는데 자살로 발표가 났었습니다. 생활도 상당히 wild했었던 모양입니다.

다른 무엇보다도 땅덩어리 크고 사람 수는 여전히 적어서 좋겠어요. 저는 이 band의 이름을 ink의 복수처럼 읽고 있었는데 저랑 같이 일하던 호주 사람이 in excess 처럼 읽어야 한다고 교정을 해 준 기억이 납니다.

끝났다고 생각하면 바보에요 - Fool (if you think it's over) by Chris Rea

인터넷에서 음악을 찾으면서 original과 비슷하거나 좀 색달라서 괜찮다고 느낀 것은 오늘이 거의 처음이 아닌가 합니다. 음질이 아주 좋거나 하지도 않지만 Chris Rea의 목소리의 매력도 잘 살리고 있고, 악기들의 소리도 하나하나 잘 살아 있다고 생각합니다. 앞뒤가 좀 잘리기는 했네요.

끝났다고 생각될 때가 많죠? 고통스러운 시간이였다면 즐거운 일이겠지만 끝나지 말았으면 하는 때도 많습니다. 마음 먹기 나름이라는 얘기를 종종 듣습니다. 사람의 정신력은 정말 무서운 힘을 발휘할 때가 많다는 것을 어렵지 않게 볼 수 있죠. 곧 월드컵이 시작하고 우리 나라 선수들이 그런 것을 다시 느끼게 해 줄 것을 알고 있습니다.

이제 막 시작하는 거니까 울지 말고 앞으로 다가 올 많은 나날들을 생각하라는 건전 가요(?)이군요.

다른 사람의 마음을 알아준다는 것 - 'If you could read my mind' by Gorden Lightfoot

학교에서는 그렇지 않지만 어른이 되고 또 사회에 나와서 참 못된 말을 많이 듣고 많이 배우죠. 본인의 생각을 남이 알게 하면 안 된다 라든가 세상에 믿을 만한 사람 한 명도 없다 든가 하는 말들을 흔히 듣습니다. 저는 처세술쪽의 책들 잘 안 읽는 편인데요. 책방에서 잘 팔리고 있는 그 계통의 책들을 보면 그저 책방에서 서서 잠간 읽어도 충분한 것들이 대부분이고 앞에만 조금 읽어도 뒤로 가면서는 뻔한 내용을 반복만 하고 있는 것들이 많다고 느낍니다. 쓸데 없는 말을 써놓는 것이야 그럴 수 있다 하지만 사람들 믿지 말고 내 속 보이지 말아라 하는 말을 굵은 글씨로 써놓고 하는 것은 찬성하지 않습니다. Poker face는 좋은 거고 자신을 보이는 건 안 좋은 거죠?

이 노래는 딱 그런 맥락에서 쓰인 건 아니라고 봅니다만 그래도 생각이 나서요. 서로의 마음을 생각을 알 수 있다면 얼마나 좋을까 하는 말이죠.

솔직하게 얘기하면 안 되나요?

하도 많이 들은 얘기라 저도 여자 친구에게 멋있게 보이고 싶어서 guitar를 열심히 치기 시작했나 기억해 보려고 하고 있습니다. 기억을 더듬어 보니 제가 처음 접하기 시작했던 때에는 여자 친구라든가 그 비슷한 관계로 갖다 붙여 볼 만한 것이 없어서 저는 아니였다고 우쭐대고 있습니다. 그 뒤로야 수도 없이 기타와 노래로 좋은 혹은 강렬한 인상을 주려고 했음을 인정합니다. 물론 좋게 본 사람도 많았지만 제게 중요한 사람은 관심이 없더군요. 현실은 항상 좀 다르죠. 그렇다고 기타나 음악에 대한 제 생각이 달라지지는 않습니다만.

아주 귀엽고 사랑스러운 노래라고 생각합니다. 특히 가사와 기타 반주가 좋습니다. 아주 쉬워서 누구든 부르실 수 있다고 봅니다.

적어도 한 번은 더 기회를 주셔야죠 - Second Chance by Shinedown

제 PC에서만 그러는지 몰라도 음질이 아주 좋지는 않네요. 제가 소개하는 곡들이 그런 적이 아주 많은 듯한데, 이 곡도 들으시면서 Shindown이 이런 style의 노래를 주로 하는 것이 아닌가 하고 생각하실 듯합니다. 힛트곡이였지만 예외적으로 이런 노래를 하고요, 대부분은 straight rock을 하는 band로 보시면 될 겁니다.

제가 생각하는 미국 rock band의 전형적인 모습을 하고 있습니다. 다들 덩치 크고요 청바지 입고 머리 긴 사람들입니다. 저는 여행 갔을 때 music video도 봤었는데 좀 슬픈 듯한 내용을 가지고 있었던 것으로 기억합니다만 못 찾겠네요.

어떤 맥락이든 한 번 더 기회를 달라고 하는데 매정하게 거절하는 경우보다는 허용하는 것이 더 많을 거라고 생각은 합니다. 세번째에 대해서는 확신할 수 없죠. 실제 상황에서는? 될 때까지 하는 거죠, 뭐. 몇 번이 되든가요.

'Don't speak'라는 노래를 힛트시켰던 No Doubt라는 band의 Gwen Stefani랑 결혼하고 애 낳고 하더니 음악 관련 소식은 전혀 없네요. wife는 musician으로는 아니더라도 활발히 뭔가 하는 듯 합니다만.

노래 가사도 이제 다시 읽어 보니 무슨 소린지 잘 모르겠네요. 그냥 그 때 기분을 표현한 게 아니였나 합니다. 외모로 봐서는 배우 등을 해도 되지 않았을까 합니다. 어떻게 보면 영국을 대표하는 배우인 Jude Law와 좀 비슷하지 않나 하고요.

하긴 이 band 말고도 노래 한 두 곡만 하고 영원히 사라진 사람들이 한 둘이 아니죠. Bush를 그렇게 부를 것은 아니겠지만 'one-hit wonder' 라고 거의 전문 용어처럼 들리는 말도 있으니까요.
