이게 미국이 맞는지 - This is not America by David Bowie and Pat Metheny

Double Dip이 되었든지 뭐든지 하여간 요즘 여러 가지로 몇 년째 전 세계 사람들을 괴롭히고 있죠. 저를 포함한 많은 사람들이 그저 익숙한 게 편해서 미국이 잘 되기를 기대하고 당연하다고 생각하는 게 깔려 있을 듯도 합니다.

이 음악도 망설이다 소개합니다. 영화 주제가였는데 영화도 별로였고 두 사람의 명성에 맞지 않는 수준의 음악이였다고 생각하기 때문에요. 그냥 'This cannot be David and Pat' 정도의 제목이였으면 저를 포함한 많은 사람들이 고개를 끄덕였을지도 모릅니다. 영화는 미국의 정보를 적국에 빼돌리는 스파이에 대한 것이였던 것으로 기억하는데 졸렸습니다.

점점 고조되고 하는 건 Pat의 분위기이고 목소리는 David Bowie의 목소리가 맞는데 조화가 잘 안 되죠.

John 형님, 진짜 이해하기 어려운 사람이죠. 본인이 하나님보다 더 위대하다고 얘기한 Beatles를 같이 이끌었고 사진으로 보기에는 너무 멀쩡하게 생긴 영국여자랑 잘 살다가 갑자기 괴상하게 생긴 일본 전위 작가랑 결혼을 하더니만...끝도 본인 의도는 전혀 없었겠지만 너무 안 좋았고..

제 혼자 생각으로 Paul형님은 Beatles의 연장선의 노래를 계속 만들고 불렀다면 John 형님은 또 다른 세계를 만들지 않았나 합니다. 누가 더 훌륭하냐 이런 말도 안 되는 얘기는 관두기로 하고요..너무나 좋은 음악을 많이 만들었지만 개꿈 꾸고 나서 만든 노래를 여기 소개합니다.

가슴이 찡하다고 하는 사람도 있고 여러 가지 표현을 쓰죠. 저는 가끔씩 감동이 필요하다고 생각할 때 이 노래를 찾습니다. "Hey Jude"나 "Let it be"도 너무 훌륭하지만 너무 많은 분들이 좋아해서 '나만의' 느낌이 좀 안 느껴져서요.

Roger Waters가 없는 Pink Floyd를 받아들이기 어려운 것처럼 Paul 형님이 여러 모로 너무나 뛰어난 사람이지만 아무래도 나머지 member들이 없이 하는 건 모자라도 많이 모자란 것으로 느껴집니다. 이 노래는 최근에 거리를 지나다가 같은 제목의 영화 광고가 붙은 것을 보고 다시 생각하게 되었습니다. video를 위에서 연결해서 보실 수 있게 했습니다만 원래 album의 평화롭고 깊은 분위기는 느껴지지 않는다고 생각합니다.

메들리라고 해야할지 노래가 계속 이어지죠. 저는 다행히(?) 이 노래들이 들은 album이 나올 때 음악을 열심히 듣고 있던 때여서 오늘 날과 같이 remastered, 이런 거 안 사고 당시 LP를 사고 아껴 듣고 했었습니다. 지금도 어딘가 있을 겁니다. 어렵던 시절에 이사를 많이 다니면서 이것저것 버려야 한다는 생각을 많이 했지만 절대 버리지 않았을 거라고 생각합니다.

혹시 저를 진짜로 이해하고 싶은 사람이 있다면 아마도 Wes Anderson의 영화를 몇 개 보라고 할 겁니다. 물론 그 사람 영화의 문법이 낯설다면 아마도 fast forward를 찾게 될 것이고 저를 이해하는 것도 그만 두게 되지 않을까 생각합니다. 지금까지는 과장이였습니다.

그럼에도 불구하고 Wes Anderson의 영화를 굉장히 좋아하는 것이 사실입니다. 실망스러운 것도 있었지만 이 video를 보니 제가 DVD를 다 가지고 있다는 것을 또 알게 되네요.

오랜 만에 보는 사람들에게 요즘 어떻게 지내셨냐고 묻게 되지요. 잘 지냈는지 아닌지, 이런 답도 나오겠지만 가끔 아래 가사 같은 답도 나오지 않을까 해서요.

9월이 다가오는데요. 좋은 기억은 아니지만 9/11이 생각이 납니다. 뭘하고 그 시간에 들어왔는지는 잘 모르겠지만 늦게 들어왔는데 TV에서 막 보여주던 장면을 아마도 계속 잊지못할 거라고 생각합니다. Terror라고는 생각지 못하고 사고라고 모든 사람들이 생각했을 겁니다. 요즘은 우리 나라사람들도 많이 쓰는 단어가 되었지만 trauma로 많은 사람들이 기억하게 되겠죠. 그런 단어 안 쓰는 세상이 더욱 좋겠지만요.

저는 Fender일 거라고 확신하고 있습니다만 - Each Time by East 17

이런 카랑카랑한 소리를 내고 싶고 듣고 싶어서 Fender를 사고 연주하고 하지 않나 합니다. 물론 Stratocaster나 Telecaster가 아닐 수도 있겠죠. 이 아저씨들의 목소리나 분위기도 guitar소리와 상당히 닮아서 상쾌하지 않은가 합니다. 노래 내용은 좀 슬픈 점도 있다고는 생각하지만요. 아저씨들 모습은 좀 어설프게 보입니다. 백인들이 흑인들 흉내내는 그런 스타일이죠.

서울 왜 이렇게 더워요? 오늘 온도계 보고 믿겨지지 않았습니다. 이 노래는 반바지 입고 슬리퍼 끌고 다니면서 이리저리 흔들면서 부르면 잘 맞겠죠? 이러다 갑자기 추워지는 건 아니죠?

절망의 절정에서 쓰여진 음악이 아닐까요? - Exit music (for a film) by Radiohead

이 band 멤버들의 외모를 보면서 'Creep'이라는 노래가 너무 잘 어울린다고 생각했었습니다. 잘 생기고 못 생기고를 떠나서 전면에 나선 싱어/리더에게 그 단어가 좀 어울리는 편이죠. 요즘은 곡을 하나씩 주로 듣는 것이 추세라고 알고 있습니다만 여전히 album을 들고 나오고 있고 막무가내로 밀어부치고 있다는 인상인데 다 훌륭했다고 생각합니다. 한 곡을 소개하면서 여러 가지로 죄책감을 느끼고 있으니 몇 개의 album을 들어보시기 바랍니다. 저 혼자 느끼는지 모르겠지만 제가 위에 쓴 대로 절망의 극에서 이런 음악들을 만드는 것이 아닌가 하는 상상을 해 봤습니다.

영화 끝날 때 나오는 음악을 얘기하는 것이 아닌가 했습니다. 가사를 읽어 보면 별 관계 없는 듯도 하고요. 많은 영화 감독들이 그 음악에 공을 기울인다는 생각입니다. 얼마 전에 본 Crazy Heart라는 한 물 간 country 가수를 따라다니는 영화의 주제가 'weary kind'도 맨 끝에 나왔던 듯 하고요. 최근에 감동 많이 받았던 'In the Air'라는 영화의 끝에도 실제로 직업을 잃은 경험을 가진 사람이 그것에 대해 쓴 노래가 마지막에 나왔었죠? 영화관에서는 안 그럴지도 모르지만 집에서는 ending credit이 다 끝날 때까지 보는 편(아니 듣는 편)입니다. 좋은 음악이 나오는 적이 많아서요.

같은 곡을 jazz pianist인 Brad Mehldau가 연주한 것도 좋았습니다. jazz라는 음악이 형식이 강하기도 하지만 얼마나 자유로울 수 있는지를 보여주는 예라고 생각합니다. 최근에 들은 몇 장의 album이 참 좋았습니다. 물론 저는 그 사람이 Pat Metheny와 같이 연주했던 것 때문에 듣게 되었고요.

아무리 위대한 그룹이라도 - Kashmir by Led Zeppelin

물론 '천국으로 가는 계단', 등등이 있는데 이 곡이 Led Zeppelin의 대표곡이라고 하면 혼나겠죠. 이러한 위대한 그룹들은 그래도 두 손으로 꼽아도 모자랄 만큼의 곡들은 남기고 있죠. 제가 이 곡에 대해서 쓰는 것은 이 곡을 들을 때마다 band가 가장 여러 가지 힘이 넘칠 때 나온 곡이라고 느껴져서요. 저 혼자만의 생각인지 몰라도 rock 음악은 힘이 느껴져야 좋지 않나 합니다. 가사를 읽어 봐도 뭔 소린지 잘 모르겠습니다. 예전에 공연하면서 Robert Plant가 어떻게 외워서 불렀나 모르겠습니다. 약이나 술에 쩔어서 끄적거린 거 아닐까 하는 생각이 들고요. 아, 가사도 위대한 가사인가요? 공항에서 비행기 기다리다가 책방에 가서 음악 잡지를 조금 들여다 봤는데요. Robert Plant는 country 음악을 열심히 하고 있다네요. 지난 번에 소위 blue grass 가수로 유명한 여자 가수와 음반 낼 때는 그냥 재미로 해 본 줄 알았는데 본격적으로 하는 모양입니다. country 음악은 Robert Plant하고 좀 안 맞지 않나 해서요. Jimmy Page 형님은 가끔씩 등장합니다. 요즘 주변에서 guitar collector들을 한 둘 보고요, 신문에서도 봤었는데요. Jimmy 형님이 쓰던 Les Paul을 찾으려고들 하시나 봐요.

다른 무엇보다도 자신들은 이 음악이 후세에 광고 음악이나 signal music으로 이렇게 많이 쓰일지는 몰랐을 거에요. 이 음악 못 들어보신 분들도 도입부는 많이 들어보셨을 겁니다. 시상식 같은 때도 많이 나오고 레슬링에서 누구 소개할 때도 나왔던 거 같고요.

제가 좋아하는 감독인 Cameron Crowe가 Rolling Stones 기자였을 때 Robert Plant와 이 곡에 대해 interview했던 내용을 인용해 봅니다. 무슨 rock vocalist가 이렇게 어려운 단어를 쓰면서 말을 이렇게 잘 하나 하는 생각이 들었습니다. Kashmir에 가보고 쓴 게 아니라는 건 여러 번 얘기했었고요, 어디 사막 비슷한 데는 갔었던 모양입니다. 아마 미국 서부가 아니였을까요?

The whole inspiration came from the fact that the road went on and on and on. It was a single-track road which neatly cut through the desert. Two miles to the East and West were ridges of sandrock. It basically looked like you were driving down a channel, this dilapidated road, and there was seemingly no end to it. 'Oh, let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dreams...' It's one of my favourites...that, 'All My Love' and 'In the Light' and two or three others really were the finest moments. But 'Kashmir' in particular. It was so positive, lyrically.

It was an amazing piece of music to write to, and an incredible challenge for me ... Because of the time signature, the whole deal of the song is… not grandiose, but powerful: it required some kind of epithet, or abstract lyrical setting about the whole idea of life being an adventure and being a series of illuminated moments. But everything is not what you see. It was quite a task, ’cause I couldn’t sing it. It was like the song was bigger than me. It’s true: I was petrified, it’s true. It was painful; I was virtually in tears..
